1 AGOT Prologue: Investigating a campsite of mysteriously dead wildlings, Night's Watch rangers are set upon by the Others, a fantastically advanced race who have been hunting them.

 

2 AGOT Bran I: Brought along to witness his first execution, seven year old Bran tries to understand the courage of the deserter who died well. But, when Robb finds direwolf pups, Bran objects vehemently to the idea they be “given mercy” instead of being brought home.

 

3 AGOT Catelyn I: Lady Catelyn Stark brings her husband, Ned Stark, news his father figure, Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King has died of an unexpected illness and that King Robert is coming to visit.

 

4 AGOT Daenerys I: Young Dany must be dressed as a princess to impress the khal who might wed her and bring his army to her brother's cause to regain the throne of Westeros. When she sees her intended, Dany says she doesn't want to marry him and is afraid, but she's more afraid of her brother.

 

5 AGOT Eddard I: After visiting Lyanna's grave in Winterfell's crypts, King Robert proposes Ned be the new Hand, and wed his eldest daughter to the crown prince. Ned would say no but, not wanting to offend the king, asks for time to consider.

 

6 AGOT Jon I: Upset about his exclusion for being a bastard, Jon asks to join the Night's Watch. Benjen says Jon should father a bastard before giving his life in service, but Jon loses his temper and swears he'll never father a bastard.

 

7 AGOT Catelyn II: Catelyn feels she must convince Ned to accept the king's offer. When Lysa's letter arrives, with its suspection Jon Arryn was murdered by the Lannisters, Catelyn leverages the power of her fear and succeeds. But Ned would leave her behind to rule in his stead until Robb comes of age.

 

8 AGOT Arya I: Her sister is the perfect lady but Arya is hopeless. She runs away in shame, hoping to see her brother, Robb, beat the crowned prince her sister gets to marry. Jon comforts her, excluded too, but she's still in trouble for having run away.

 

9 AGOT Bran II: Climbing the battlements one last time, Bran overhears a conversation about his father. When he maneuvers to see who is talking, Bran sees the queen naked wrestling with her twin brother. They catch him and Jaime shoves Bran out the window.

 

10 AGOT Tyrion I: Having stayed up all night reading, Tyrion stops on his way to breakfast to remind his nephew, the crowned prince, to visit the Starks and comfort them, as they're worried about their son who fell and hasn't woken up yet. At breakfast, Tyrion tells Jaime Bran is going to live and that he will stop by Winterfell on his way back from the Wall to hear what the boy says.

 

11 AGOT Jon II: After saying goodbye to Arya and giving her Needle, Jon must face his step-mother to say goodbye to Bran. She tries to deny him entry, but he defies her. After he's given Bran his love, Jon hears Catelyn's grief and speaks gently to comfort her, but she turns on him and says he's the one who should be hurt.

 

12 AGOT Daenerys II: Dany trembles through her Dothraki wedding, fearing her wedding night. When the time comes, she fears her brother's wrath should she disappoint. But her husband is patient and gentle. With such a protector, her brother will never hurt her again.

 

13 AGOT Eddard II: Ned begins to regret having accepted the Handship when Robert wakes him early, upset about a Targaryen girl being wed in Essos. Robert would send knives after Dany. Reminded of the argument their friendship fell off on, Ned must rein in his emotions and effectively manipulate his king in order to serve him.

 

14 AGOT Tyrion II: Tyrion tells Jon the Wall is a penal colony and not the noble calling he's been told it is. When Jon is furious, Tyrion teaches him to feel his anger by imagining his enemies burning. That night, he sees Jon staring into the fire.

 

15 AGOT Catelyn III: A nervous wreck of worry by Bran's bed, Catelyn has insisted his wolf be kept outside. But she changes her mind after someone's catspaw tries to slit Bran's throat and his wolf saves both of their lives. Taking the knife, Catelyn travels to King's Landing to investigate.

 

16 AGOT Sansa I: When the queen cancels tea, she tasks Joffrey to look after Sansa. It's a dream come true. But, when they encounter Arya practicing swordplay with sticks and Joffrey turns bully, Nymeria bites Joffrey to disarm him. Then, he hates Sansa.

 

17 AGOT Eddard III: Arya is brought before the king for judgment and the queen calls for Lady's pelt as a trophy. Lord Stark kills Lady, himself, to deny the queen her trophy. But the Hound has ridden down Mycah, his body cut nearly in two.

 

18 AGOT Bran III: In his dream, he is falling, but a crow flies beside him saying he must learn to fly. Bran sees the Others coming, wakes up, and shivering, names his direwolf Summer.

 

19 AGOT Catelyn IV: Catelyn would keep her presence in King's Landing a secret, but an armed guard finds her and brings her to Littlefinger. He introduces her to Varys and Littlefinger recognizes the dagger as belonging to Tyrion Lannister.

 

20 AGOT Jon III: Hurt and angry he's been sent to live among criminals, Jon keeps to himself and is hard on the other boys in practice. Donal Noye tells Jon he's a bully and that he is no better than any man of the Watch.

 

21 AGOT Eddard IV: Ned arrives in King's Landing already late for the first meeting of the small council. He learns Robert has bankrupted the crown, but still means to throw away a fortune on a tourney in his honor. Littlefinger leads Ned to Catelyn, who he's hidden in a brothel. She begs him to learn who tried to kill Bran and to trust Littlefinger.

 

22 AGOT Tyrion III: When Lord Commander Mormont begs Tyrion to bring their case before his sister at court, Tyrion knows there will be no aid from the crown. He even thinks it's all baloney until he walks atop the Wall with Jon and looks out into the freezing darkness.

 

23 AGOT Arya II: When her father finds Needle, Arya is sure he'll take her sword. Instead, he tells her they've come to a dangerous place and explains their house words: winter is coming. The next day, she is called to dancing lessons, but finds her father has employed a Braavosi sword master to teach her, in secret.

 

24 AGOT Daenerys III: After she wakes from a dragon dream to find her fears have dissolved, Dany flexes her power enraging Viserys. Dany's bloodriders defend her from Viserys. Embracing the Dothraki as her people, Dany leads Drogo outside to conceive their son under the stars, where all things of importance happen.

 

25 AGOT Bran IV: When Tyrion brings Bran his saddle design as a favor to Jon, the direwolves surround him. Yorren shares that Benjen is missing.

 

26 AGOT Eddard V: Starting with the maester who administered milk of the poppy to end Jon Arrn's suffering, Ned begins to investigate the likely murder of the former Hand. Littlefinger provides leads and warns Ned to use a proxy to continue his questioning.

 

27 AGOT Jon IV: When Samwell Tarly arrives at the Wall, Jon takes him under his wing and defends him as a brother.

 

28 AGOT Eddard VI: After hearing Jory's report, Ned follows Jon Arryn's footsteps to the armory. Ned meets Gendry and immediately knows he's a bastard son of Robert's.

 

29 AGOT Catelyn V: Catelyn decides to risk being recognized at an inn for a hot meal and warm bed. But when Tyrion Lannnister recognizes her, she calls her father's banners. Catelyn takes Tyrion captive to answer for his knife being used in an attempt on her son.

 

30 AGOT Sansa II: Delighted at the splendor of the Hand's tourney, Sansa is given a red rose by Loras and meets Littlefinger. Sansa is surprised to not weep when Ser Hugh is killed before her, but when the Hounds walks her home, she feels for him when he makes her look at his burned face.

 

31 AGOT Eddard VII: When Robert despairs of Joffrey, it seems Ned will be able to tell him. But can he find proof in time? Varys tells Ned Cersei is trying to kill Robert. The Hound defends Loras against the Mountain.

32 AGOT Tyrion IV: Tyrion gets his first taste of battle when Catelyn releases him from captivity to help fight the attacking mountain clans.

 

33 AGOT Arya III: Chasing cats, Arya winds up in the dungeon. Arya overhears Varys and Illyrio.

 

34 AGOT Eddard VIII: When Robert determines to send assassins for Daenerys because she's pregnant, Ned resigns as Hand and prepares to leave King's Landing. But Littlefinger delays him with an intrigue.

 

35 AGOT Catelyn VI: After near death on the high road, Catelyn is concerned she seized Tyrion hastily. He may be innocent. When Catelyn reaches the Eyrie to find her sister changed. She meets the lord who will judge Tyrion: a six year old boy who would execute him untried.

 

36 AGOT Eddard IX: In his irritation with Robert, Ned wonders if he made the wrong choice in rebelling against Rhaegar. He sees another of Robert's bastards, this one by a young girl in love with the king. But it may have been unwise for Ned to delay his departure. Ned is confronted by Jaime about Catelyn's abduction of Tyrion.

 

37 AGOT Daenerys IV: Arriving in Vaes Dothrak, Dany is ashamed that Viserys hasn't embraced Dothraki culture. He's held in contempt by her people. But when she gifts him with fine Dothraki clothing, he hurts and menaces her until she strikes him. Disowning her brother, Dany cradles her belly and speaks to her child.

 

38 AGOT Bran V: Trying out his new saddle in the wolfswood, Bran is taken hostage by a group of wildlings and deserters. Robb, who feels guilty at having left Bran alone, loses his temper at Theon, who has rescued him.

 

39 AGOT Tyrion V: In a skycell of the Eyrie, Tyrion worries he'll die before he can stand trial. He bribes the guard, saying he wishes to confess, just to survive. Knowing the judge is predisposed to execute him, Tyrion calls for trial by combat.

 

40 AGOT Eddard X: After a fever dream of tearing down the Tower of Joy to build cairns for eight noble men, Ned wakes in the Tower of the Hand to learn eight of his men were killed in Jaime's ambush. Ned asks Robert for justice, but Robert only orders Ned to make peace with Jaime and stay Hand. He's going hunting.

 

41 AGOT Catelyn VII: The Blackfish calls Tyrion's Trial by Combat at the Eyrie a fool's festival. He's exonerated, but Lysa gives him a death sentence anyway by evicting him onto the high road.

 

42 AGOT Jon V: When Jon and his friends are to graduate from training, he goes to Maester Aemon to beg him to let Sam graduate, too. Jon recommends Sam be Aemon's assistant, since he can read and Chett cannot. Aemon may have, in turn, recommended Jon be named Mormont's steward

 

43 AGOT Tyrion VI: Tyrion takes Bronn into his service so as to not be left by him, then convinces the sellsword to follow his lead as he initiates their capture by the mountain clans Bronn wanted to avoid. Though their captive, Tyrion wins over the hill tribes and they become his protecting escort.

 

44 AGOT Eddard XI: When Ned sits the throne in Robert's absence, he means to overcome his impulse to seek vengeance against Jaime. He denies Piper and Vance their request to raid the Mountain's lands. Instead, Ned sends a party of kingsmen after the Mountain and calls Tywin Lannister to court to answer for the crimes of his bannerman.

 

45 AGOT Sansa III: Sansa tells Arya Mycah deserved what he got for attacking Joffrey and Arya's blood orange ruins her ivory engagement dress. Ned figures out Joffrey is not Robert's. When Ned announces they'll return to Winterfell, Sansa feels herself slain, and unjustly as Lady was.

 

46 AGOT Eddard XII: Ned warns Cersei he means to tell Robert, giving her a chance to flee with her children. But Cersei tells him she means to win.

 

47 AGOT Daenerys V: After Dany eats a horse's heart, her son is prophesied to be the stallion that mounts the world. At the celebration feast, Viserys enters drunk and draws steel, threatening Dany's unborn child and demanding the army Dany was payment for. Drogo kills Viserys with a crown of melted gold.

 

48 AGOT Eddard XIII: On his deathbed, King Robert names Ned regent. Ned writes to Stannis to invite him to claim the throne. Believing he's secured the goldcloaks through Littlefinger, Ned feels he's done the right thing by turning down Renly's offer of swords to seize the royal children in the night.

 

49 AGOT Jon VI: Sam is included in the graduation ceremony, but Jon is appointed Lord Commander Mormont's steward. Sam explains it's a sign of favor, not a cruelty. When they go beyond the Wall and say their Night's Watch vows before a heart tree, Ghost returns with a hand.

 

50 AGOT Eddard XIV: Before the council can name Ned regent, they're summoned to the throne room where Cersei shreds Robert's will. Ned openly claims Stannis is heir and Littlefinger reveals his treachery. The coup favors the Lannisters.

 

51 AGOT Arya IV: When Meryn Trant and five red cloaks come for Arya at her dancing lessons Syrio Forell gives his life to buy her time to escape. Luck reunites her with Needle, but Arya has to kill a stable boy. Retracing her path through the dungeon, Arya escapes the Red Keep.

 

52 AGOT Sansa IV: Ruling from the head of the council table, queen Cersei bids Sansa write letters summoning her family to court to pledge fealty to Joffrey. Sansa thinks if she is well behaved and Joffrey loves her, she'll be able to convince him to pardon her father, once she's queen.

 

53 AGOT Jon VII: Two corpses are found and brought back. One is missing the hand Ghost found. But they rise in the night and Jon saves Mormont from undead rangers, using fire.

 

54 AGOT Bran VI: Robb has called the banners and has to show strength to be taken seriously. He also has to ride to war. Osha warns Robb is going the wrong way, that the real threat is in the north, but it's too late to redirect their force. Rickon seems right that no one ever returns. Now Bran is lord.

 

55 AGOT Daenerys VI: Jorah uses intel from Varys to protect Dany from the assassin Varys provoked. Still, in response to the assassination attempt on Daenerys by a wine merchant, Drogo vows to conquer Westeros.

 

56 AGOT Catelyn VIII: Catelyn joins Robb at Moat Cailin. He discusses his plan to divide his army to launch a sneak attack on Jaime's siege. Catelyn decides to join Robb's campaign to Riverrun instead of returning to Winterfell.

 

57 AGOT Tyrion VII: Tyrion arrives at Tywin's camp at the inn at the crossroads. When he understands the mountain clans have brought Tyrion to ransom him, Tywin convinces them to fight in his van, first. Learning Robb's army has started moving south, Tywin moves north to meet him.

 

58 AGOT Sansa V: At court, Slynt is elevated while Barristan Selmy is dismissed from the kingsguard to make room for the Hound. Hoping to discern whether Joffrey loves her, Sansa comes before him in court. Sansa begs mercy for Ned.

 

59 AGOT Eddard XV: Varys comes to Ned in the black cells and tells him Sansa's life is in danger. Varys convinces Ned to make false confession to treacherous treason and go to the Wall, to save Sansa.

 

60 AGOT Catelyn IX: At the Twins, Catelyn negotiates with Lord Walder Frey on Robb's behalf.

 

61 AGOT Jon VIII: Lord Commander Mormont gifts Jon with his family valyrian steel sword, Longclaw.

 

62 AGOT Daenerys VII: The Dothraki sack the lamb men. Dany stops the rapes of women being taken as slaves and asks Mirri Maz Durr to tend Drogo's wound.

 

63 AGOT Tyrion VIII: Tyrion is woken by trumpets to battle on the Green Fork. Seeing how the army is organized, Tyrion concludes Tywin meant for him to die in battle.

 

64 AGOT Catelyn X: The Blackfish's trap in The Whispering Wood succeeds at capturing Jaime Lannister.

 

65 AGOT Daenerys VIII: When Drogo falls from his horse, Dany asks Mirri Maz Duur to bring him back with blood magic.

 

66 AGOT Arya V: After barely surviving life as an orphan in fleabottom, Arya witnesses Ned's beheading and is taken by Yoren who cuts her hair and calls her “boy.”

 

67 AGOT Bran VII: After waking from a dream that his father is in the crypts, Bran convinces skeptical Luwin to take him down to see. Rickon and Shaggydog are in Ned's crypt. That day, the letter comes from King's Landing with news of Ned's execution.

 

68 AGOT Sansa VI: Now that he is king, Joffrey forces Sansa to look at her father's severed head. It seems Sansa might push Joffrey to his death, but the Hound intervenes.

 

69 AGOT Daenerys IX: When Mirri Maz Duur reveals her treachery, Dany grieves her child. Realizing she must undo the monstrosity of her error, Dany smothers Drogo to death with a pillow.

 

70 AGOT Tyrion IX: The Lannister cause is in poor shape: Robb's plan has made a fool of Tywin, Renly has crowned himself with Tyrell support, Jaime is captive and Joffrey beheaded Eddard Stark. Busy in the field, Tywin sends Tyrion to King's Landing as Hand in his stead. Concerned Tywin's intention is treacherous, Tyrion defies him by bringing Shae, the camp follower Tywin forbid him from bringing to court.

 

71 AGOT Jon IX: When he learns of his father's execution, Jon deserts the Night's Watch to join Robb's campaign. His brothers bring him back and Lord Commander Mormont tells Jon he plans to range north in force and needs Jon to commit to his cause, saying it does not matter who sits the iron throne.

 

72 AGOT Catelyn XI: When the Greatjon proposes secession to the disgruntled lords of the north and riverlands, Robb is named King in the North.

 

73 AGOT Daenerys X: Declaring herself khal, Dany hatches her dragon eggs on Drogo's funeral pyre.

A Clash of Kings

74 ACOK 1 Prologue: Stannis Baratheon learns the storm lords have already gathered to Renly and will not back his legitimate claim, as Robert's true heir. Davos thinks they're all fools who follow Stannis, since he means to press his claim without the numbers based on what Melisandre has seen in her fires. Maester Cressen dies failing to poison Melisandre.

 

75 ACOK 2 Arya I: Yoren smuggles Arya out of King's Landing with the men for the Night's Watch. On the road, she's bullied by Hot Pie at Lommy's urging, but gets in trouble with Yoren when she defends herself too forcefully.

 

76 ACOK 3 Sansa I: Joffrey's name day a tourney is a pretext for Cersei to menace hostages. Sansa convinces Joffrey to spare Dontos, making him serve as a court fool. It's a relief when Tyrion arrives with a large guard of savages to take control.

 

77 ACOK 4 Tyrion I: Tyrion convinces Cersei to accept him as her Hand. He takes stock of the city's poor condition, finding Varys has beat him to the inn and already questioned Shae. Varys tells The Riddle of the Sellsword.

 

78 ACOK 5 Bran I: Big and Little Walder Frey are at Winterfell and Bran is named judge of their game, Lord of the Crossing. The direwolves are confined to the godswood after Shaggy bites Little Walder. Bran realizes he's not dreaming but being Summer.

 

79 ACOK 6 Arya II: Travelers warn Yoren he's walking into a war zone. Gold cloaks come with a warrant for Gendry. The men for the Watch combine their strength to defend one of their own.

 

80 ACOK 7 Jon I: Sam would rather stay in the library, but he's to accompany Mormont's ranging party. When news comes that Robb has been crowned, Maester Aemon tells Jon he's a Targaryen and turned down the crown.

 

81 ACOK 8 Catelyn I: Robb sends peace terms to Cersei with Ser Cleos and Theon to Balon. Catelyn conceives of the idea to treat with Renly as an ally.

 

82 ACOK 9 Tyrion II: Angered that goldcloaks killed Barra, one of Robert's bastards, Tyrion betrays Slynt at dinner and sends him to the Wall. However, Tyrion worries he's only replaced Littlefinger's man with Varys's. When he asks Bronn if he'd unquestioningly kill an infant, Bronn says he'd ask the pay.

 

83 ACOK 10 Arya III: Yoren's party runs out of food in the warzone and it gets scary. They rescue a toddler from a burned village. When she goes to make water in the woods, Arya comes face to face with wolves. She tells Yoren she's afraid and he tells her he should have left King's Landing by ship and that, in thirty years of taking this road, he's never seen it like this.

 

84 ACOK 11 Davos I: Melisandre announces Stannis is Azor Ahai in a farcical pageant. She burns the seven to present Lightbringer, a sword of fire that Salladhor Saan says is just burnt. Stannis's letter is being copied. Davos is sent to spread his claim Robert's children are illegitimate and that Stannis is the rightful king of Westeros.

 

85 ACOK 12 Theon I: When he arrives in Lordsport, Theon is surprised at the cold welcome. At first it's unclear why his father so distrusts him, but Theon learns Balon plans to conquer the north.

 

86 ACOK 13 Daenerys I: Though she only said they'd follow the comet to justify her decision to cross the Red Waste, the comet leads Dany to the rich and beautiful city of Qarth. As it would have been death to go any other direction, Dany claims the comet as the harbinger of her coming and feels her mission to Westeros to be divinely guided.

 

87 ACOK 14 Jon II: Mormont's ranging party investigates Whitetree, an abandoned wildling village.

 

88 ACOK 15 Arya IV: Arya warns they shouldn't stay in the holdfast by the Godseye, since all the locals have fled. But Yoren says they'll be safe because the Night's Watch takes no part in the wars of the realm. But Amory Lorch burns the holdfast and Arya saves the three from the wagon.

 

89 ACOK 16 Tyrion III: Littlefinger suggests a counter-rumor when news of Stannis's letter reaches Cersei. Tyrion orders the city's metal workers to construct a massive chain. Varys takes Tyrion through the wardrobe at Chataya's to hide that he visits Shae.

 

90 ACOK 17 Bran II: The first guests arrive for the Harvest Feast, and Bran must act the role of lord while the other boys joust the quintain. The newly widowed Lady Hornwood complains of suitors, Wyman Manderly of his son's captivity. Bran remembers his fall.

 

91 ACOK 18 Tyrion IV: Tyrion tests his councilors to see who leaks to Cersei. He steals poison from Pycelle and offers Harrenhal to Littlefinger.

 

92 ACOK 19 Sansa II: At the invitation of a note found under her pillow, Sansa goes to the godswood and meets Dontos. Joffrey leads a sortie against hungry beggars hoping for scraps from Tyrek's wedding feast. The Hound escorts Sansa back to her room, telling her he'll have a song from her.

 

93 ACOK 20 Arya V: Arya thinks she can sneak food from the village. But it turns out to be a military outpost and Arya's party is captured by the Mountain's men.

 

94 ACOK 21 Tyrion V: Tyrion visits the pyromancers and reads Robb's peace terms before handing them to Cersei. Tyrion shaves Pycelle for playing informant to Cersei.

 

95 ACOK 22 Bran III: The Reeds arrive at the Harvest Feast and Jojen touches Bran by touching Summer.

 

96 ACOK 23 Catelyn II: Catelyn arrives at Renly's camp in time to see Brienne of Tarth win the melee and be invested into Renly's Rainbow Guard. Renly learns Stannis is laying siege to Storm's End.

 

97 ACOK 24 Jon III: Mormont's ranging party arrives at Craster's. Gilly begs Jon's help because he's a king's brother. Jon learns that Craster sacrifices his sons to the Others.

 

98 ACOK 25 Theon II: When Theon goes to see his ship, he's tested by his sister, Asha, who pretends to be the shipwright's wife. Theon learns he is not Balon's heir; Asha is.

 

99 ACOK 26 Tyrion VI: In a toast to brotherly love, Tyrion poisons Cersei to sit the throne so he can have her guard sent away on the pretext of escorting Cleos.

 

100 ACOK 27 Arya VI: Interrogations by the God's Eye break Arya's lip and cripple her spirit. Arya starts her list. The villagers seized from the surrounds are marched to Harrenhal to work as servants. They are slaves.

 

101 ACOK 28 Daenerys II: Dany accepts the invitation of Xaro Xhoan Daxos and takes up residence in a wing of his mansion. Hoping for a sign she is meant to conquer Westeros, Dany sends Jorah to the docks. He returns with news. Dany learns the Usurper is dead.

 

102 ACOK 29 Bran IV: Jojen tells Bran he has green dreams. Bran lies and says he does not dream. Fear from his falling dreams keeps Bran from telling Jojen he dreams of being Summer. Bran asks Luwin about greenseers. Luwin says they're extinct, that magic doesn't work and not to get hopes up.

 

103 ACOK 30 Tyrion VII: Tyrion takes Lancel for his spy. He feels so good after his triumph Tyrion thinks he's in love with Shae.

 

104 ACOK 31 Arya VII: Jaqen H'ghar gives Arya three deaths to name. She wonders if she ought to kill them herself, being a Stark. Her list, which helped keep her calm on the road to Harrenhal, is now a kill list.

 

105 ACOK 32 Catelyn III: Catelyn joins as Renly and Stannis parlay. Her hope they will unite with Robb against the Lannisters falls apart when each refuses to bend the knee to the other. Stannis tells Renly he has until dawn to submit or be destroyed.

 

106 ACOK 33 Sansa III: Joffrey beats and strips Sansa for Robb's victory at Oxcross. Tyrion intervenes and would shelter her in the Tower of the Hand, but Sansa requires pretext to visit the godswood to escape with Dontos, so lies to Tyrion to be returned to her chambers in Maegor's.

 

107 ACOK 34 Catelyn IV: Renly is slain by shadowsword. Catelyn realizes his men will go over to Stannis now, epowering the one who would use sorcery. She fears Stannis will come for Robb.

109 ACOK 36 Bran V: After one of Jojen's dreams comes true and Bran believes him, Jojen tells Bran the sea is coming to Winterfell. A captive named Reek is brought to the dungeon. Jojen has dreamed Reek will flay Bran and Rickon's faces and they'll lay in the crypts.

 

110 ACOK 37 Tyrion VIII: Tyrion proposes to council to wed Joffrey to the Tyrells but won't leave King's Landing to broker the deal when Cersei suggests it. When Littlefinger offers to negotiate with the Tyrells, requiring a document granting him the authority to negotiate on behalf of the king, Tyrion realizes he's been given too much power. Cersei gives Tyrion the kiss of death and he asks Bronn to look into it.

 

111ACOK 38 Theon III: Disliking the taste of the Old Way, Theon convinces Dagmer Cleftjaw to lay siege to Torrhen's square.

 

112 ACOK 39 Arya VIII: Tywin marches from Harrenhal. Arya realizes too late she should have given Tywin's name to Jaqen H'ghar.

 

113 ACOK 40 Catelyn V: Arriving back at Riverrun, Catelyn defies Robb's order she depart for the Twins. Catelyn takes Brienne into service. When she realizes Ned's bones are there with the silent sisters, she orders them sent to Winterfell, but does not accompany.

 

114 ACOK 41 Daenerys III: Refused by the Enthroned, Dany despairs. Her money is gone and Xaro presses to wed her to take a dragon. Yet, the comet guided her to Qarth for a reason. Dany decides to try one last thing before leaving: Pyat Pree and the Undying.

 

115 ACOK 42 Tyrion IX: Myrcella sets sail for Dorne. During return to the Red Keep, the procession grows unruly, resulting in the bread riots. The Hound saves Sansa. Tyrion slaps Joffrey's crown off.

 

116 ACOK 43 Davos II: Ser Courtnay Penrose offers single combat for Storm's End. But Stannis sees no reason to take any risk. Stannis sends Davos to smuggle Melisandre into the walls of Storm's End where Melisandre births a murderous shadowbaby.

 

117 ACOK 44 Jon V: When Qhorin Halfhand arrives, most men are ready to return to the Wall, but so little has been learned. Mormont decides to send three small ranging parties to gather information on what Mance is doing in the Frost Fangs. Qhorin Halfhand selects Jon for his ranging party, suspecting he's a warg.

122 ACOK 49 Daenerys IV: At the House of the Undying, Dany sees many prophetic visions. But it's a trap. Drogon rescues her, burning the Undying Ones and their palace of dust.

 

123 ACOK 50 Tyrion XI: Tyrion knows his defense preparations demonize him. He must order the fish market burnt down, seize the trading galleys in the port, and sign Varys's lengthy list of warrants for the Antler Men.

 

124 ACOK 51 Theon IV: When Bran and Rickon appear to have escaped, Theon rounds up a hunting party to go after them. Reek sets Theon up to seem to have killed Bran and Rickon by suggesting the stunt with the miller's boys.

 

125 ACOK 52 Jon VI: Jon volunteers to go with Stone Snake to kill the scouts at the wildling outpost who have built a fire. Jon kills Orell the warg, but would take Ygritte hostage. Stonesnake warns against it, but Qhorin lets Jon make the call. Jon spares Ygritte.

 

126 ACOK 53 Sansa IV: When Sansa wakes to find she's flowered, she panics in her attempt to hide the evidence. Sansa is brought to Cersei who expects Stannis to take King's Landing.

 

127 ACOK 54 Jon VII: When Jon has a wolf dream he's Ghost and sees the wildling camp before being attacked by an eagle, Qhorin acts like his dream may be true. Ghost returns with a wound. When Qhorin sees an eagle watching them, he gives the command to retreat. They've been seen and will be hunted, now.

 

128 ACOK 55 Tyrion XII: Cersei invites Tyrion to dinner to tell him she has Alayaya. Cersei says Varys betrayed him. When Tyrion returns to his chambers, Varys has brought Shae there.

 

129 ACOK 56 Catelyn VII: Deep in grief at news of Bran & Rickon's deaths, Catelyn sends wine to Jaime. Bringing Brienne with her, Catelyn pays Jaime a midnight visit, interrogating him about Bran's fall and the catspaw. Jaime appears to provoke Catelyn and she calls for Brienne's sword.

 

130 ACOK 57 Theon V: When Asha arrives from Deepwood Motte with reinforcements, Theon thinks he's saved. But she only brought him ten men. Reek offers to gather Bolton men to Theon's cause.

 

131 ACOK 58 Sansa V: Sansa is made to kiss Hearteater. She goes to the sept to pray. She has to leave when they start to pray for Joffrey. Sansa goes to the Queen's Ballroom in Maegor's where Cersei is feasting the city's highborn ladies. Ser Ilyn Payne attends them.

 

132 ACOK 59 Davos III: Under the vainglorious command of Ser Imry Florent, Davos and his sons sail into Tyrion's trap on the Blackwater. A cog full of wildfire leaks into the water, igniting in a massive explosion. When Davos makes to swim to the boats further back, he sees they're trapped. The chain is raised.

 

133 ACOK 60 Tyrion XIII: Tyrion's conscience is troubled by the success of his trap, but knows it's not enough. When the Hound says he won't go out again, Tyrion leads a sortie to route the ram at the King's Gate, rallying the men by shaming them.

 

134 ACOK 61 Sansa VI: In the Queen's Ballroom, Cersei gets tipsy and menaces Sansa with threats of Ser Ilyn. Assuming Sansa has been praying for Stannis to destroy the Lannisters, Cersei tells Sana she'll be killed if Stannis takes the castle, saying she'll give the Starks no cause for joy in her demise.

 

135 ACOK 62 Tyrion XIV: Tyrion rides onto the bridge of ships, where Ser Mandon Moore cuts Tyrion's face in his attempt to kill him.

136 ACOK 63 Sansa VII: When Cersei leaves with Lancel, Dontos tells Sansa to lock herself in her chambers. But the Hound is drunk in her bed. He threatens to kill her if she screams, and tells her he would protect her if she comes with him. When she does not answer, he demands a song. He would have her sing of Jonquil and Florian, but she can only remember the Hymn of the Mother. The Hound departs without Sansa, weeping, and Sansa curls up under his discarded white cloak.

 

137 ACOK 64 Daenerys V: After Arstan Whitebeard saves Dany from a Sorrowful Man's manticore, he says he and Strong Belwas have been sent by Illyrio with ships to bring her back to Pentos. Having taken the murmurings of the Undying to heart, Dany sees this rescue as evidence it is her destiny to conquer Westeros. She renames the three ships after Aegon's dragons.

 

138 ACOK 65 Arya X: News of Winterfell's fall and Bran and Rickon's deaths reaches Harrenhal. Arya despairs. When Roose Bolton says he'll not take her with when he goes north, Arya asks Harrenhal's heart tree for guidance. She determines she must escape to Robb at Riverrun or be Nan forever. Convincing Gendry and Hot Pie to come with her, Arya kills a guard and escapes Harrenhal.

 

139 ACOK 66 Sansa VIII: The Lannister award ceremony sours when Stannis loyalists prefer to die denouncing Joffrey as a bastard born of incest than be pardoned. But Sansa is overjoyed she's been officially set aside for Margaery Tyrell, until Dontos tells her Joffrey can still claim her maidenhead.

 

140 ACOK 67 Theon VI: After threatening to hang little Beth Cassel and realizing he's doomed, Theon sees the sense in surrendering and joining the Night's Watch. But salvation comes in the form of Reek's promised men. They slaughter Ser Rodrick's united forces. But, when Theon lets them in the gate, as friends, Reek reveals he's Ramsay Snow and orders Winterfell burned.

 

141 ACOK 68 Tyrion XV: Tyrion wakes from a fever dream to realize he's in Cersei's clutches in Maegor's, kept sleeping with milk of the poppy and silent by a bandage over his mouth. Tyrion assumes this means Cersei sent Ser Mandon to kill him. Forcing Maester Ballabar to remove his bandage, Tyrion sees he has been made hideous by his wound he'd forgotten about.

 

142 ACOK 69 Jon VIII: Qhorin Halfhand orders Jon to survive as a spy among the wildlings to escape and report back to Castle Black, leveraging his own death to get Jon in.

 

143 ACOK 70 Bran VII: Bran and party emerge from their hiding place in the crypts to see Winterfell has burned. Maester Luwin tells Osha the princes must be separated, so she takes Rickon east while Bran and the Reeds go north.

144 ASOS 1 Prologue: Chett's desertion scheme is already underway by the time Mormont announces a Night's Watch suicide mission against the Mance's wildlings. But, all his careful planning is ruined by a sudden snow. Then, the Others attack the Fist of the First Men.

 

145 ASOS 2 Jaime I: Once free of Brienne, Jaime will escape and ignore his vow to trade himself for Catelyn's girls. But a river galley tasked to recapture Jaime is already gaining on them. Jaime expects to die fighting, but in a feat of resourcefulness, Brienne sinks Ryger's galley.

 

146 ASOS 3 Catelyn I: Catelyn asks to be confined with Hoster but, when he mistakes her for Lysa, he cries out and Catelyn understands him to have forced as abortion on her sister. When Edmure returns, he overreacts to Catelyn's hostage exchange attempt. Edmure initiates a massive manhunt for Jaime, describing him as escaped.

 

147 ASOS 4 Arya I: When she realizes she's endangered her friends, Arya feels guilty. They would still be safe at Harrenhal if not for her. She has to protect them. Arya unwittingly wargs Nymeria to kill the Bloody Mummers who have been tracking them.

 

148 ASOS 5 Tyrion I: Tyrion ventures from his room to be seen alive and evade Cersei's catspaws, visiting Tywin in the Tower of the Hand. When Tywin, who has no time for visits, asks Tyrion what he wants, Tyrion asks for Casterly Rock. Tywin rages, saying “never” and promising to hang the next whore he finds in Tyrion's bed.

 

149 ASOS 6 Davos I: Davos would flag the passing ship, but knows he'll die if he fails. When he reaches for his luck, to find his knucklebones missing, Davos prays to the Mother for mercy. The Mother tells Davos the fire on the Blackwater was retribution for having burned the gods. But that was Melisande. Rising with new purpose, Davos is rescued from the merling king's spear.

 

150 ASOS 7 Sansa I: Sansa doesn't know how she can turn down Margaery's invitation to dinner, but it turns out to be Olenna's. Olenna proposes Sansa visit Highgarden after Joffrey's wedding to meet and marry her grandson Willas.

 

151 ASOS 8 Jon I: Jon is worried he'll be executed when he lies to Mance about his desertion. But the King Beyond the Wall offers him guest right and treats him warmly. Mance accepts Jon into his wildling army.

 

152 ASOS 9 Daenerys I: Warning not to trust Illyrio, Jorah advises Dany to change course for Astapor and sell Illyrio's goods to buy an army of Unsullied.

 

153 ASOS 10 Bran I: Though they might find sanctuary with loyal bannermen, Bran decides to go north to seek the three-eyed crow beyond the Wall. If he doesn't, it will be as though he never left the crypts.

 

154 ASOS 11 Davos II: Seeing red as he travels toward Melisandre with a dagger for her heart, if she has one, Davos means to restore Stannis. Salladhor Saan warns he'll be burnt alive if he gives them an excuse, but Davos presents himself at Dragonestone holding tight to his murderous intent. Ser Axell accuses Davos of meaning to kill Melisandre and escorts him to the dungeon.

 

155 ASOS 12 Jaime II: After Brienne buys horses at The Inn of the Kneeling Man and takes the route the non-innkeep warned against, Jaime provokes her hoping to kill her and escape. Jaime remembers how Cersei seduced him into the Kingsguard for Aerys and how he later slew Aerys and was judged for it.

 

156 ASOS 13 Tyrion II: Tyrion searches Varys's chambers, discovering them to be a front. He presses Varys to arrange a final meeting with Shae so he can explain he's sending her away for her protection. But Shae hopes to attend the wedding feast as his lady. Tyrion fails to send Shae away, so orders Bronn to bring him Symon Silver Tongue.

 

157 ASOS 14 Arya II: Foraging in an abandoned garden, Arya's pack is discovered by Tom, Lem and Anguy. After luring them to the Inn of the Kneeling Man on the promise of a meal, Tom gives Arya paper for their horses. She declines, but it wasn't an offer. When Harwin is among the riders who arrive, Arya runs to him. Harwin tells the brotherhood Arya is the Hand's daughter.

 

158 ASOS 15 Catelyn II: When Robb returns to Riverrun, Catelyn and Rickard Karstark present her treason to him. But he is contrite, himself. Robb has married Jeyne Westerling. The outraged Freys have left their cause. Robb and the Blackfish turn their ire on Edmure for the Stone Mill. Catelyn suggests he make up for it by restoring Frey to their cause with a wedding.

 

159 ASOS 16 Jon II: Jon realizes he should kill Mance if Mormont attacks, but learns the Others attacked the Fist of the First Men. Mance takes Jon to task for having lied about how many Night's Watch were in the area. Mance tasks Jon to climb the Wall and attack Castle Black.

 

160 ASOS 17 Sansa II: Cersei has Sansa measure for a new gown. Sansa has been taken in by Margaery's entourage and warns Margaery against Joffrey. But, when Sansa tells Dontos she's going to Highgarden to marry Willas, he warns against the Tyrells, saying they only want her claim to Winterfell. Nevertheless, Sansa plans to keep her new dress clean to take to Highgarden.

 

161 ASOS 18 Arya III: The story of the Mummer's Ford. When she realizes the kingsmen aren't taking her to Riverrun, Arya makes a run for it. Harwin brings her back and Arya wishes she had stayed Squab instead of revealing her identity. Harwin was already Dondarrion's man, and no longer Robb's.

 

162 ASOS 19 Samwell I: Pursued by wights as he runs from the Fist of the First Men, Sam finally is too weak to go on and falls in the snow, prepared to die. Grenn and Small Paul won't leave him. When wights attack again, Sam kills a wight with the dragonglass dagger Jon gave him.

 

163 ASOS 20 Tyrion III: At Tywin's small council, Tyrion is informed he's being made new Master of Coin and given the north through Sansa Stark.

 

164 ASOS 21 Catelyn III: When the bodies of the Lanister boys are discovered, Robb rages at having been made guilty of war crimes. Robb executes Lord Rickard Karstark. Jeyne asks Catelyn for advice about how to be a good wife to Robb in his struggles.

 

165 ASOS 22 Jaime III: Though Brienne reins in Jaime's escape attempt, impressing him with her strength and sword skill, his antics lead to their capture and The Bloody Mummers cut off Jaime's hand.

 

166 ASOS 23 Arya IV: After visiting the Lady of the Leaves in a hidden treetop village, the kingsmen take Arya to Sallydance, High Heart, and Acorn Hall. Lady Smallwood has seen Lord Beric Dondarrion recently when Thoros brought her sheep. Arya ruins a pretty acorn dress wrestling with Gendry.

 

167 ASOS 24 Daenerys II: At Astapor, Dany is shown the Unsullied, an elite force of eunuch slave soldiers trained to obedience by tests of horrors. Though Baristan Selmy begs her to hire sellswords instead, Dany is so upset by the stories of the Unsullied training that she knows she must free them by finding a way to buy them.

168 ASOS 25 Bran II: Bran's party has run out of food in the mountains. Fortunately, a fellow traveler invites them to share his fire in a cave and his board as well. Meera tells the story of the Knight of the Laughing Tree.

 

169 ASOS 26 Davos III: Davos expects to die in the dungeon of Dragonstone. Melisandre visits, telling him Stannis is Azor Ahai reborn. Lord Alester Florent is brought to join him for having sent peace terms to Tywin.

 

170 ASOS 27 Jon III: Ygritte has worn him down and Jon and Ygritte are lovers. Ygritte tells the story of Gorne & Gendel and they make love in the cave, Ygritte insisting Jon stole her.

 

171 ASOS 28 Daenerys III: Intending treachery, Dany pretends to sell Drogon for the Unsullied. When the exchange is made, Dany commands the Unsullied to kill their former masters.

 

172 ASOS 29 Sansa III: When her new dress is ready, Cersei's own handmaids dress Sansa. When they bring out the maidencloak, she freezes. Tyrion tells her she may choose Lancel over him, but she remembers Tyrion protected her. Still, Sansa does not kneel to spare Tyrion's feelings, nor find a way to see his beauty. Though Tyrion and Sansa are wed, the marriage remains unconsummated.

 

173 ASOS 30 Arya V: At Stoney Sept, Arya gives drinks of water to the men in the crow cages and Anguy puts arrows through their heads. At The Peach, she's made to bathe again and dressed up in frilly girl's clothes. Gendry tells a stinky man she's his sister and gets angry when she asks him why. The Mad Huntsman returns with a captive they call “Lannister.”

 

174 ASOS 31 Jon IV: Jon climbs the Wall. Jarl's elite team is lost. Jon recalls Ned saying a wall is only as strong as the men who defend it. Ygritte reveals what Mance was looking for in the Frost Fangs: the Horn of Winter to bring down the Wall.

 

175 ASOS 32 Jaime IV: Jaime has been reduced to a state of infancy by his injury. He can only whimper in pain. Brienne cares for him and cautions him not to die a craven. In gratitude, when the Bloody Mummers come to gang rape Brienne, Jaime speaks loudly of Brienne's ransom of sapphires. Roose Bolton has Qyburn see to Jaime's stump, but does not speak of returning him to Riverrun.

 

176 ASOS 33 Tyrion IV: The fish market is growing back outside the King's Gate. The river must be reopened to trade, but is treacherous with the wreckage of ships from the Blackwater. Tyrion asks Bronn to kill Symon Silvertongue. Meeting with Tywin, Tyrion sees Oathkeeper and Hearteater. He reports on the financial need, but Tywin just tells him to figure it out. When Tywin schemes to see Slynt elevated to Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, Tyrion wishes he'd killed Slynt instead of sending him to the Wall.

 

177 ASOS 34 Samwell II: The mutiny at Craster's Keep. When food runs low, and their wounded fellows are dying, Chett's mutineers turn on Craster and kill Lord Commander Mormont. Sam escapes with Gilly to protect her baby from the Others, who are coming.

 

178 ASOS 35 Arya VI: Inside the Hollow Hill, the Mad Huntsman's captive is revealed to be the Hound. He's accused of the Mountain's crimes, but asks if they take him for his brother. Arya accuses him of killing Mycah and Lord Beric Dondarrion sentences the Hound to trial by combat. The Hound kills Dondarrion, but Thoros bring him back to life.

 

179 ASOS 36 Catelyn IV: Lothar Frey arrives to discuss terms. Hoster's funeral. Robb and Catelyn discuss Sansa's marriage to Tyrion. Lothar brings the news Winterfell has burned.

 

180 ASOS 37 Davos IV: Ser Axell offers Davos a ship to recommend him to Stannis as new Hand. Stannis questions Davos, including about the definition of treason. Liking his answers, Stannis raises Davos to lord and names him Hand. Melisandre burns leeches to kill the usurpers: Joffrey Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy and Robb Stark.

 

181 ASOS 38 Jaime V: Jaime confides in Brienne in the bath at Harrenhal. At dinner, Bolton tells Jaime he's to be escorted to King's Landing but that Brienne will be given to Vargo Hoat.

 

182 ASOS 39 Tyrion V: When Tyrion welcomes the Dornish wedding guests, he's surprised that the Red Viper has come in the place of Prince Doran, Dorne's ruler. Prince Oberyn tells Tyrion the story of how Cersei showed “Tywin's doom” to him and Elia during their visit to Casterly Rock.

 

183 ASOS 40 Arya VII: The Brotherhood ambush the Bloody Mummers at a septry and burn it down. They hang the captured brigands, giving them trials first. Gendry asks to join the Brotherhood and is knighted.

 

184 ASOS 41 Bran III: At Queenscrown, Bran remembers how to get to the tower in the water. A storm comes and they lay low, hoping the armed men who have arrived don't figure out how to get to the tower.

 

185 ASOS 42 Jon V: When Jon refuses to kill the lone traveler sheltering in the ruin of the inn, he is sees his chance when Summer starts killing Thenns. Jon escapes the wildlings and aims for Castle Black, but he's taken Ygritte's arrow and feels guilty about betraying the wildlings.

 

186 ASOS 43 Daenerys IV: Trying treachery again, Dany defeats Yunkai by promising three days of peace and attacking that night.

 

187 ASOS 44 Arya VIII: When The Ghost at High Heart tells Lord Beric at seek Lady Catelyn at the Twins instead of at Riverrun, it changes their plans. But Arya has had enough. Calling them liars, she runs away to cry by herself. The Hound takes Arya to ransom her, since the Brotherhood took his gold.

 

188 ASOS 45 Jaime VI: Jaime's escort departs Harrenhal with Bolton's. On the road, Qyburn tells Jaime that Vargo Hoat has decided to rape Brienne, since her father had no sapphires. After a troubling dream, Jaime turns his escort back to Harrenhal. Jaime rescues Brienne from the bear pit.

 

189 ASOS 46 Catelyn V: The wedding party leaves Riverrun. Robb tells Catelyn he must keep the Lannisters from inheriting Winterfell through Sansa, should he die without issue. Robb seals his will. Robb's plan to take Moat Cailin.

 

190 ASOS 47 Samwell III: Sam and Gilly find a village much like Whitetree, but with a longhall. Wights attack that night, but Sam & Gilly are rescued by Coldhands.

 

191 ASOS 48 Arya IX: The Hound takes Arya to the ferry at Harroway Town. The river is so flooded they lose a man crossing. Though the Hound has promised gold to cross, saying “knight's honor” he gives the paper the Brotherhood gave him when they took his gold and says it's supposedly good for nine thousand dragons. Arya learns the Hound is taking her to her family at the Twins.

 

192 ASOS 49 Jon VI: Jon makes it back to Castle Black and sounds the alarm. Waking from milk of the poppy, Jon learns of the poor state of affairs: the mutiny at Craster's, Sam missing, Winterfell burnt.

 

193 ASOS 50 Catelyn VI: The wedding party arrives at the Twins and receives bread and salt. Edmure is taken with Roslin. Catelyn investigates why Roslin has been selected. Where is the trap?

 

194 ASOS 51 Arya X: The Hound and Arya arrive outside the Twins, Arya wants to reveal herself to the first likely nothmen, but fears Bolton. The Hound is disguised as a pig farmer and he's cut Arya's hair to pass her off as his son. He drops off the pig's feet and aims toward the castle.

 

195 ASOS Catelyn VII: The Red Wedding. The musicians are too many and not gifted. Grey Wind barred from castle. Black Walder suspiciously well behaved. Olyvar away on duty. Ryman sweating. Fat Walda brags of Bolton choosing her over Fair Walda. Roose Bolton's toast reminds he has Big & Little Walder. Roslin is stiff with terror at the call to bedding and Catelyn wonders. Trap springs just after Dacey Mormont notices Edwyn's mail. The musicians begin to play “The Rains of Castamere.” Catelyn takes Jingelbell hostage and bargains for Robb's life. Lord Walder turns her down.

196 ASOS 53 Arya XI: When Arya sees the drawbridge opening, she tastes success, but the Hound tells her to get down. He explains it's a massacre and she'll be killed if she goes into the castle, but Arya darts away. The Hound rides Arya down like he did Mycah and hit her in the head with his axe.

 

197 ASOS 54 Tyrion VI: After a strained dinner with Sansa, Tyrion learns of Tywin's hand in the Red Wedding. Tywin learns that Cersei has miseducated the king and sends Joffrey to bed. He tells Cersei she will remarry. Tywin tells Tyrion he means to deny justice to Dorne.

Davos reads a letter from the Wall and intentionally withholds it from Stannis because it reminds him of Stannis's vision in the flames and he doesn't want to give more power to Melisandre.

 

199 ASOS 56 Jon VII: Though wounded, Jon helps prepare to guard against the attack. They hold the gate, but Jon finds Ygritte dying. The stairwell to the top of the Wall had to be burned down in the defense.

 

200 ASOS 57 Bran IV: Bran's party arrive at the Nightfort. They are led through the Wall through a secret gate by Samwell Tarly who tells them Coldhands is waiting to lead them north.

 

201 ASOS 58 Daenerys V: Knowing they'd be next on her path, Meereen chose to taunt Dany so she would not pass them by, making sign posts of dead slave children. When Arstan is revealed to be Ser Barristan Selmy, come to join her queensguard, and Jorah an informer, Dany sends Selmy and Jorah up the sewers to take Meereen from within.

 

202 ASOS 59 Tyrion VII: Sansa won't open up to Tyrion or allow him to console her. Tyrion has sex with Shae in the dungeons among the dragon skulls, feeling wretched and guilty.

 

203 ASOS 60 Sansa IV: The Purple Wedding breakfast. Tyrion is prickly, looks rumpled and starts drinking early. When Joffrey hack up the rare book Tyrion gave as a wedding gift, Tyrion figures out Joffrey sent the catspaw for Bran. Oberyn and Ellaria would befriend them, but Tyrion is too prickly. Tyrion reaches out to Sansa for intimacy, but she doesn't know what he needs. Tyrion smolders.

 

204 ASOS Tyrion VIII: The Purple Wedding. Tyrion stews about Joffrey having sent the catspaw. He asks Sansa about traveling to get away from Joffrey. Lady Olenna adjusts Sansa's hairnet. Tyrion notices happy couples and wishes he'd be kissed. Joffrey calls in the dwarf joust and begins to prod at Tyrion, who wipes the floor with him before Joffrey succumbs to poison and dies. Cersei accuses Tyrion and Sansa.

 

205 ASOS 62 Sansa V: Hysterically happy that Joffrey is dead, Sansa changes into the dark dress and cloak Dontos proscribed. They row out to a ship. But Sansa's secret benefactor is Littlefinger. He kills Dontos and tells Sansa she will be like a daughter to him.

 

206 ASOS 63 Jaime VII: When Jaime arrives back in King's Landing, he has to have Brienne locked in a tower cell to protect her from Loras. He finds Cersei in the sept, grieving over Joffrey's body laid out in golden armor. Jaime forces himself on Cersei on the altar of the Mother and proposes marriage, but she gives him no answer. Tywin would have Jaime leave the kingsguard to wed Margaery Tyrell, but Jaime insists he's staying in the Kingsguard.

 

207 ASOS 64 Davos VI: Davos smuggles Edric Storm away from Dragonstone before he can be burnt alive. When Melisandre demands the boy and Davos confesses, Stannis raises Lightbringer to execute him. Davos tells Stannis about the letter from the Wall, reading it aloud by the light of the sword that would execute him.

208 ASOS 65 Jon VIII: Mance's army arrives at the Wall. The Night's Watch wins the first battle, but is close to spent. Donal Noye holds the gate against Mag the Mighty. Aemon names Jon temporary commander.

 

209 ASOS 66 Arya XII: Traveling with the Hound, Arya wants to go back to the Twins to save her mother. In a wolf dream, Arya drags her mother's corpse to shore. Arya tells the Hound she knows her mother is dead. Then she feels like no one.

 

210 ASOS 67 Tyrion IX: Tyrion's trial by Tywin. Tyrion can't name a witness to his character, let alone a champion. Dozens of Cersei's lickspittles testify against him. That night, Prince Oberyn visits. Oberyn offers to be Tyrion's champion.

 

211 ASOS 68 Jaime VIII: Jaime assesses the blank space on his page in the White Book and recalls the kind of man he wanted to be. He also assesses the men on his kingsguard, unimpressed by Cersei's additions. Jaime confronts Loras about Brienne's innocence, requiring him to question her.

 

212 ASOS 69 Sansa VI: At Littlefinger's tower on the fingers, Littlefinger gloats of influencing the Tyrells when he brokered their marriage to Joffrey and predicts Margaery will marry Tommen. Lysa and Littlefinger are wed. Sansa darkens her hair to become Alayne, a false identity as Littlefinger's bastard daughter.

 

213 ASOS 70 Jon IX: After they destroy Mance's turtle with a barrel of frozen gravel, Jon sleeps. He's woken by strangers who would indict him for a turncloak. Rattleshirt has told them everything. Though Aemon says they do Jon a great wrong, Thorne & Slynt press charges against Jon as a turncloak.

 

214 ASOS 71 Tyrion X: Shae's testimony. Oberyn's plan to queen Myrcella. Tyrion's second trial by combat: Viper vs. Mountain.

 

215 ASOS 72 Daenerys VI: The view from the Great Pryamid is lonely. Dany regrets having crucified the Great Masters. The government she installed in Astapor has been overthrown by a butcher. Dany calls Jorah and Selmy to account for their cromes against her. Selmy is noble and contrite but Jorah unapologetic. Dany exiles Jorah and resolves to stay in Meereen while her dragons grown, and learn to rule.

216 ASOS 73 Jaime IX: Kevan and Cersei both approach Jaime, pressing him to submit to Tywin. Jaime proposes marriage to Cersei again and is rebuffed. Jaime gives Oathkeeper to Brienne and tasks her to find and protect Sansa.

 

217 ASOS 74 Jon X: Jon's death sentence mission to assassinate Mance under the guise of diplomacy is disrupted when Stannis routes Mance's army.

 

218 ASOS 75 Arya XIII: The Hound goes into an inn for wine, but three Mountain's Men are there. Arya recognizes Polliver and the Tickler. It comes to blows and, though they win the Hound is injured. He asks Arya for the gift of mercy, but she denies him. In Saltpans, Arya boards a ship to Braavos, using her iron coin as fare.

 

219 ASOS 76 Samwell IV: When Jon fears Slynt will win the election for new Lord Commaner and hang him, Sam realizes someone has to convince Cotter Pyke or Denys Mallister to drop out and support the other. Sam keeps his meeting Bran a secret from Jon.

 

220 ASOS 77 Jon XI: Stannis would raise Jon to Lord of Winterfell. He needs someone to reunite the north under him. Stannis plans to allow the wildlings through the Wall and settle them in the Gift. Jon asks for time to think.

 

221 ASOS 78 Tyrion XI: After Jaime frees Tyrion, having arranged his escape through Varys, Jaime tells Tyrion Tywin made him lie about Tysha. Tyrion goes to confront Tywin, find Shae in his bed and strangles her. Tyrion Kills Tywin.

 

222 ASOS 79 Samwell V: Stannis tells the Night's Watch leaders it's taking them too long to choose a new Lord Commander. Aemon learns Lightbringer is cold. Sam speaks to Pyke and Mallister about dropping out to support the other. It turns out, each would drop out to support Jon.

 

223 ASOS 80 Jon XII: Angrily remembering Robb echoing Catelyn's words that Jon would never be lord of Winterfell because a bastard, Jon is too fierce in training. Ghost returns and Jon realizes he'll turn Stannis down, especially knowing Stannis would require him to burn the heart tree of Winterfell. Unexpectedly, Jon is elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, instead.

 

224 ASOS 81 Sansa VII: At the Eyrie, Sansa makes a snow Winterfell. But, when Littlefinger surprises her with a kiss in view of Lysa, Sansa is called to the High Hall where Lysa accuses her of trying to seduce her husband. Raging, Lysa tells Sansa she poisoned Jon Arryn for Littlefinger and threatens to push Sansa through the Moon Door. But Littlefinger pushes Lysa through the Moon Door, which seems to have been his plan and reason for kissing Sansa.

 

225 ASOS 82 Merrett Frey Epilogue: Riding to Oldstones to ransom Petyr Pimple, Merrett Frey worries he'll starve when his father dies and Ser Ryman inherits. Merrett failed to get the Greatjon too drunk to fight at the Red Wedding. Merrett is hanged by the Brotherhood under a new leader, the undead Lady Catelyn Stark.

226 AFFC 1 Prologue: Pate, a novice at the Citadel, dreams of Rosie, but her maidenhead costs a dragon. When a stranger offers a dragon for the deceased Maester Walgrave's iron key, Pate steals it to trade. But, the coin is poisoned and Pate falls to the cobblestones when he bites it.

 

227 AFFC 2 The Prophet: Aeron's baptisms are interrupted by Spar and Goodbrother with the news Balon is dead and Euron sits the Seastone chair. Absolutely opposed to Euron, Aeron declares they shall have no king but from a kingsmoot.

 

228 AFFC 3 The Captain of Guards: As Prince Doran watches the children play in the watergardens, he determines he must return to Sunspear to keep peace. The sandsnakes, Prince Oberyn's deadly bastard daughters, call for war as they scheme vengeance on the Lannisters. Doran orders the sandsnakes imprisoned in the Spear Tower.

 

229 AFFC 4 Cersei I: With Tywin dead and Tyrion missing, Cersei fears the worst and rises to assume control.

 

230 AFFC 5 Brienne I: No one in Rosby has seen Sansa. Brienne meets Ser Creighton Longbough and Ser Illifer the Penniless who insist on traveling with her for her protection, after she swears she didn't kill Renly. Sparrows pass them on the road, all headed to King's Landing. Ser Shadrich, the Mad Mouse, is looking for Sansa, too. Brienne sheds her companions at the inn to stay true to her mission to protect Sansa.

 

231 AFFC 6 Samwell I: Sam has been pouring through the library for information on the Others. When he's called to Jon, Samwell passes a tearful Gilly. Jon orders Sam to ship to Oldtown with Maester Aemon and Gilly. Sam is to become a maester and return.

 

232 AFFC 7 Arya I: Arya arrives at the House of Black and White and must convince a kindly man to let her join the order.

 

233 AFFC 8 Cersei II: Tywin's funeral. Qyburn shows her the Gardener's coin. Kevan turns down the Handship.

 

234 AFFC 9 Jaime I: Standing vigil as Tywin's funeral continues, Jaime remembers Arthur Dayne having been a father figure to him and reaches out to Tommen.

 

235 AFFC 10 Brienne II: Seeking Sansa in Duskendale, Brienne has the Lothston shield repainted. At the Dun Fort, the maester tells her she is the twenty-first to ask of Sansa. A begging brother gives Brienne a lead: a fool at the Stinking Goose in Maidenpool was seeking passage to Essos for three. Nimble Dick bragged he'd fooled the fool. The boy following Brienne turns out to be Podrick Payne.

 

236 AFFC 11 Sansa I: Sansa can't sleep for Marillion's singing. When Nestor Royce arrives to hear the testimony of Marillion, who Littlefinger claims killed Lysa, Sansa worries she won't be able to lie convincingly but looks a wreck and Sweetrobin is taken by his shaking sickness. Littlefinger grants Lord Nestor the Gates of the Moon in Lysa's name.

 

237 AFFC 12 The Kraken's Daughter: From the count of ships, Asha on Harlaw acknowledges she does not have the backing to win the kingsmoot. She has brought the Glovers as hostages. Rodrik the Reader recommends she choose between Stannis and Tywin and serve the iron throne. Tristifer Botley proposes marriage but Asha tells him to get over her and that she's going to be his queen.

 

238 AFFC 13 Cersei III: After drinking too much and breaking down at Tommen's wedding to Margaery Tyrell, Cersei burns the Tower of the Hand.

 

239 AFFC 14 The Soiled Knight: After seducing him, Arianne convinces Ser Arys to help her queen Myrcella.

 

240 AFFC 15 Brienne III: At Maidenpool, Brienne is reunited with Ser Hyle Hunt, a scoundrel knight who once started a pot on her maidenhead. At the Stinking Goose, Nimble Dick agrees to guide Brienne out to Crackclaw Point, where he sent the fool.

 

241 AFFC 16 Samwell II: At sea, aboard Blackbird for Braavos, Gilly sobs and Sam is greensick.

 

242 AFFC 17 Jaime II: Jaime assesses his nearly blank page in the White Book and recalls the kind of man he used to want to be. He finds Cersei's additions to his kingsguard mostly unimpressive. Loras reminds him of a younger version of himself. Jaime requires Loras to question Brienne to recognize her innocence in Renly's death.

244 AFFC 19 The Iron Captain: Victarion Greyjoy, who has no luck with wives, arrives on Old Wyk. Victarion is a favorite to win the kingsmoot. He is displeased by Euron's presence and tells Asha Balon banished Euron for raping Victarion's wife.

 

245 AFFC 20 The Drowned Man: The Kingsmoot. Though Aeron prays and insists no godless man may sit the Seastone chair, thinking such a thing could not happen in this holy place, Euron wins the kingsmoot.

 

246 AFFC 21 Brienne IV: Guided by Nimble Dick, Brienne and Podrick ride for days to seek Sansa at the Whispers. But the fool there is Shagwell with two of the Bloody Mummers who held Brienne and Jaime captive. Brienne draws Oathkeeper in self defense, her first kill.

 

247 AFFC 22 The Queenmaker: To crown herself by crowning Myrcella, Arianne and her friends meet in the desert in a stunning sunset. But Areo Hotah is waiting for them at the Greenblood, Arys is slain and Darkstar wounds Myrcella before riding away.

 

248 AFFC 23 Arya II: A poor liar and novice at the House of Black and White, a girl is clearly Arya of House Stark. She sheds her belongings, as required, but Arya hides Needle instead of throwing her sword away.

 

249 AFFC 24 Alayne I: The Lords Declarant come to take Sweetrobin to ward but, when Lyn Corbray draws his sword, Littlefinger takes umbrage and the Lords must accede. Littlefinger reveals to Sansa that Corbray is in his pay.

 

250 AFFC 25 Cersei V: Margaery has Tommen wanting to sit the throne, now. Cersei offends the iron bank, tells Qyburn he may take two women. Cersei remembers the tent of Maggy the Frog.

 

251 AFFC 26 Brienne V: On the road to Saltpans with Septon Meribald, Podrick, Ser Hyle and Dog, Brienne learns about broken men.

 

252 AFFC 27 Samwell III: As Aemon shivers, dying in Braavos, Sam waits for Dareon to return with food and firewood. Instead, news of dragons comes with rescue by Xhondo.

 

253 AFFC 28 Jaime III: On the road to Harrenhal, envisioning a new leaf as Goldenhand the Just, Jaime realizes Tywin has devastated the region, even those who kept faith. 259 AFFC 34 Jaime V: Jaime arrives at the siege of Riverrun committed to take the castle without breaking his oath to Catelyn. Genna complains to Jaime about Cersei's rule and tells Jaime he's not enough like Tywin.

 

260 AFFC 35 Cat of the Canals: Though surveying the Ragman's Harbor disguised as an oyster seller, Arya breaks her cover to kill Night's Watch deserter Dareon, as a Stark. She tells the kindly old man as one of her three observations and wakes up blind.

 

261 AFFC 36 Samwell IV: Aboard Cinnamon Wind for Oldtown. Aemon's funeral. Sam is deflowered by Gilly.

262 AFFC 37 Cersei VIII: After receiving the news that Loras has taken Dragonstone and the Redwyne fleet sails for the Reach, Cersei realizes killing Margaery could forestall all Maggy the Frog's prophecies, even the valonquar, after Qyburn assures Cersei she knows how.

 

263 AFFC 38 Brienne VII: At the inn of the Crossroads, now run by orphans, Ser Hyle proposes marriage to give her a house full of children. Brienne reviles Hyle but considers telling Jaime she's failed to find Sansa, returning his sword, and going home to Tarth. But men on horses arrive. It's the raiders of Saltpans. Biter injures Brienne and she loses consciousness.

264 AFFC 39 Jaime VI: Committed to take the castle without breaking his oath to Catelyn, Jaime convenes a war council, removes Edmure from the gibbet and sends Ser Ryman Frey back to the Twins. Jaime negotiates with Edmure to take Riverrun in exchange for his family's safety.

 

265 AFFC 40 Cersei IX: Gathering testimony against Margaery, Qyburn mutilates the Blue Bard. Cersei pays the justiciar with the Handship and sends Osney Kettleblack to present false witness to the new High Septon.

 

266 AFFC 41 The Princess in the Tower: After lonely confinement in a tower cell, Arianne is finally brought before her father, Doran. Doran tells Arianne she was always his heir and that Quentyn's secret mission to Essos contributes to his plan for revenge.

267 AFFC 42 Alayne II: Myranda Royce accompanies for the dizzying descent from the Eyrie to the Gates of the Moon. Littlefinger tells Sansa she's to wed Harry the Heir.

 

268 AFFC 43 Brienne VIII: Carried through feverish half-consciousness, Brienne is brought before Lady Stoneheart and required to kill Jaime with Oathkeeper or hang. Brienne chooses to die rather than be treacherous, but when she sees Podrick hanging, realizes she has to save him and says the word “sword.”

 

269 AFFC 44 Cersei X: When she visiting the Great Sept to gloat over Margaery, Cersei is shown that tortured Ser Osney has confessed Cersei's crimes as well as his own. Cersei is taken by the Faith.

 

270 AFFC 45 Jaime VII: Riverrun has been delivered to its new lord, Emmon Frey, but the Blackfish has escaped. Sybell Westerling is upset she wasn't warned about the Red Wedding. Jaime begins to think about how to seize power from Cersei. Jaime burns Cersei's letter.

 

271 AFFC 46 Samwell V: Samwell arrives in Oldtown, visits the Citadel and meets Alleras who brings him to Grandmaester Marwyn. When Sam relays Aemon's message, Marwyn leaves immediately to go to Daenerys.

272 ADWD 1 Prologue: The Others have arrived. North of the Wall, rogue warg Varamyr Sixskins dies trying to take the body of Thistle, a wildling woman, and enters his second life as the wolf One Eye.

317 ADWD 46 The Blind Girl: Arya is sent begging on the Isle of Gods in a new persona as Blind Beth. Feeling herself to be the Night Wolf, Arya wargs a cat in order to see. The next morning, she wakes to find her sight restored.

 

318 ADWD 47 A Ghost in Winterfell: After Theon hears his name by the heart tree, Able's women seize him. They promise him a merciful death for aiding in their rescue of Jeyne Poole, since he so dreads punishment by Ramsay.

319 ADWD 48 Tyrion X: Tyrion is sold at auction in the slave market in the Yunkish camp outside Meereen. He saves Jorah from the fighting pits and reveals his identity to Brown Ben Plumm, beating him at cyvasse. At the end of the night, Tyrion learns he's to perform the dwarf joust before Daenerys

 

320 ADWD 49 Jaime I: Slowly realizing the Lannister approach to rule is unworkable and unconscionable, Jaime ends the siege of Raventree Hall. Brienne begs him to help her save Sansa from the Hound and he goes with her.

 

321 ADWD 50 Jon X: Alys Karstark weds Sigorn of Thenn beyond the Wall in an arrangement by Jon. Val returns with Tormund.

 

322 ADWD 51 Daenerys VIII: Feeling defeated, Daenerys must feast the Yunkish generals. She gives hostages to keep the peace. Daenerys shows her dragons to Quentyn Martell and tries to scare him into departing or allying without marriage.

 

323 ADWD 52 Theon: Ser Hosteen appears to slit Wyman Manderly's throat, blaming him for the murder of Little Walder Frey. Theon rescues Jeyne Poole from Ramsay by reaching her through their mutual abuse. They jump from Winterfell's walls.

 

324 ADWD 53 Daenerys IX: At the fighting pits, Dany is upset to see Barsena killed by a boar, as the Usurper was. She prevents the dwarf joust from being eaten by lions. Dany leaves Meereen flying Drogon.

 

325 ADWD 54 Jon XI: Jon negotiates with Tormund and informs Selyse and the Night's Watch men of the terms of a deal that leaves no one happy and Jon uneasy. Val is upset by Shireen's greyscale. Bowen Marsh calls Jon's plan treason.

 

326 ADWD 55 Cersei I: With no response from Jaime, Cersei has begun to pray in earnest. Cersei makes confession to the Faith and begs Kevan to appoint Qyburn's man to the kingsguard to be her champion.

327 ADWD 56 The Queensguard: At the Great Pyramid of Meereen, Ser Barristan Selmy assumes temporary command in Daenerys's absence. He tempers Skahaz and involves Grey Worm until officially relieved of duty by Reznak mo Reznak. Then, Barristan decides to join Skahaz.

 

328 ADWD 57 The Iron Suitor: On the Isle of Cedars, Victarion's luck seems to turn when Grief arrives with the shipwrecked red priest, Moqorro.

 

329 ADWD 58 Tyrion XI: Pretending to fetch water for the dying Yezzan, Tyrion escapes to the Second Sons with Jorah and Penny.

 

330 ADWD 59 Jon XII: Tormund's thousands pass through the Wall. The ships sent to aid Hardhome call for rescue by land.

 

331 ADWD 60 The Discarded Knight: With the Yunkai impatient to sack Meereen, Hizdahr plans to stall. Selmy warns Quentyn to sail immediately.

 

332 ADWD 61 The Spurned Suitor: At the Purple Lotus in Meereen, Quentyn tries to buy the Windblown to steal a dragon.

 

333 ADWD 62 The Griffin Reborn: Jon Connington takes back Griffin's Roost, writes to Prince Doran and prepares to take Storm's End. But Aegon wants to lead.

 

334 ADWD 63 The Sacrifice: At a crofter's village three days ride from Winterfell, queensmen burn a human sacrifice to R'hllor. As though a godsend, Tycho Nestoris arrives to tell Stannis he'll be funded by the iron bank against the Lannisters. He brings Asha's men, Jeyne Poole and Theon.

 

335 ADWD 64 Victarion I: As Moqorro's advice leads to riches and favorable winds, Victarion increasingly incorporates R'hllor into his fleet's religion. Moqorro binds dragonbinder to Victarion, an important step in betraying Euron.

336 ADWD 65 The Ugly Little Girl: Arya is shown the hall of faces, wears her first face, gives the gift and is promoted to acolyte.

 

337 ADWD 66 Cersei II: Still pining for Jaime, Cersei walks atonement. She breaks down when she realizes the people see her as an ordinary woman, not as a queen. But at the end, when she's reduced to a scrambling animal, Cersei is lifted into the arms of her savior: the newly invested Ser Robert Strong.

 

338 ADWD 67 Tyrion XII: Signing a pile of checks, Tyrion joins the Second Sons. His plan: to convince them to turn their cloaks back to Meereen.

 

339 ADWD 68 The Kingbreaker: Ser Barristan Selmy seizes Hizdahr for trial to realize the dragons are loose.

 

340 ADWD 69 The Dragontamer: Quentyn's dragon taming fails when Rhaegal shoots fire at him.

 

341 ADWD 70 Jon XIII: Jon is redirected from his plan to rescue Hardhome by The Pink Letter. He rallies the wildlings to retake Winterfell from Ramsay, but Jon is stabbed in a mutiny by men of the Night's Watch and falls to the ground.

342 ADWD 71 The Queen's Hand: After Quentyn dies, Selmy sends the Dornish to hire the Windblown to free the three hostages.

 

343 ADWD 72 Daenerys X: After giving up trying to fly Drogon back to Meereen, Dany tries to return on foot but is overcome by a combination of sun stroke and food poisoning. Laying in the grass, she comprehends Quaithe's advice. Dany decides to go east to go west. Hearing a Dothraki scout, Daenerys seizes the moment. She calls Drogon and follows the scout to his khalasar, landing to eat by her dragon and negotiate with Khal Jhaqo from a standpoint of strength.

 

344 ADWD 73 Epilogue: Competent new Hand Kevan Lannister consciences an undead kingsguard to keep Tommen on the throne and for Lannister dignity. He was behind Cersei's walk of atonement. But Kevan and Pycelle are assassinated by Varys.
