When Lord Commander Mormont begs Tyrion to bring their case before his sister at court, Tyrion knows there will be no aid from the crown. He even thinks it's all baloney until he walks atop the Wall with Jon and looks out into the freezing darkness.

The wet nurses in the south are more optimistic than those in the north. Tyrion recalls his telling him that one day, if men were good, the gods would give the world a summer without ending. Now Mormont is pointing out it's been nine years of summer, said to mean a similarly long winter. Tyrion has never known hunger and he hadn't known cold until he came to The Wall in summer. He's being reminded he's a sweet summer child and being shown a great summer that is ending.

Droll

Before Aemon describes Tyrion as "a giant come among us, here at the end of the world" Tyrion has the ill fortune to be challenged by Ser Alliser Thorne, distracting from a plate of fine crabs. Tyrion tells Mormont Thorne has no business training recruits.

Lord Mormont worries to Tyrion that he won't be possible to replace when he dies. The Watch used to build every year. Now, they dwindle.

Scenes

1: Thorne and Mormont: Tyrion must defend against Thorne. Mormont sees the Watch falling into disrepair.

2: Tyrion would go in, but some force draws him to the Wall where he encounters Jon.
