When Jaime arrives back in King's Landing, he has to have Brienne locked in a tower cell to protect her from Loras. He finds Cersei in the sept, grieving over Joffrey's body laid out in golden armor. Jaime forces himself on Cersei on the altar of the Mother and proposes marriage, but she gives him no answer. Tywin would have Jaime leave the kingsguard to wed Margaery Tyrell, but Jaime insists he's staying in the Kingsguard.
