When Jon and his friends are to graduate from training, he goes to Maester Aemon to beg him to let Sam graduate, too. Jon recommends Sam be Aemon's assistant, since he can read and Chett cannot. Aemon may have, in turn, recommended Jon be named Mormont's steward
